Burials Brisbane: Important Considerations
To recap, a burial is where the deceased’s body is buried at the gravesite in the casket or coffin.
1. Burial Plot
When a body is buried, you will need to purchase a burial plot. Some families choose these locations and pay for them years in advance.
It’s important to note that a plot or gravesite offers a permanent place where loved ones can go to visit and honour the person who has passed away.
2. Service
There are a number of options when it comes to burials in Brisbane and south-east Queensland, including:
- Non-attended burials,
- Graveside services,
- Church services with a burial and
- Chapel services with a burial.
At Anton Brown Funerals we can help you determine where and when you would like to hold a service – if you’d like to have one at all.
Find out more about the above services here.
3. Cost
Generally speaking, burials tend to be more expensive than cremations, but there are plenty of variables so it’s best to discuss the price with your funeral director.
The following factors can impact price:
- The location of your gravesite. Some cemeteries have a standard pricing across the site, but others do charge more for plots depending on their location within the property.
- There can be fees for new graves and fees to re-open graves (this information is typically available on the cemetery website.)
- Extra details of a grave also add to the cost, such as headstones and plaques.
Cremations Brisbane: Important Considerations
A cremation is where the deceased body’s is reduced to ashes.
1. Internment of Ashes
You may wish to keep your loved one’s ashes in a permanent place, such as a columbarium (a room or building with niches for funeral urns) at a church or cemetery.
Just like a gravesite, this final resting spot can be pre-paid and bought ahead of a person’s death.
On the other hand, some people wish to have their ashes kept or scattered in a place of significance, such as a family property or a favourite beach.
2. Service
For those who wish to have a service along with a cremation, there are a number of churches and chapels to pick from across south-east Queensland.
Alternatively, some people don’t want to have a full service and will opt for a non-attended cremation instead.

3. Cost
While cremations tend to be less expensive than burials, there are still several costs to factor in. These include:
- Cremation fees from the crematorium
- Fees to hire a church or chapel
- Cost of an urn or cost of a columbarium where remains are stored.
