A direct cremation may be a straightforward and uncomplicated option for those who don’t want an elaborate funeral service in a church or chapel.
This type of cremation (also known as a non-attended cremation, cremation only and no-service cremation) has been increasing in popularity over the years and has also become the preferred choice for many families during the pandemic, especially as interstate travel for services has been impacted.
In this blog we explain what a direct cremation is, what’s included in this type of arrangement, and the common reasons for choosing this alternative.
What is Direct Cremation and What is Included?
A direct cremation is when a family chooses to have their loved one cremated, but don’t hold a traditional funeral service as their farewell to the deceased.
For those who decide on a non-attended cremation, here at Anton Brown Funerals our process is as follows:
- We discuss arrangements and wishes with the family
- The necessary paperwork is filled out and a death certificate is filed by our funeral directors
- We transfer the deceased to the crematorium to be cremated
- In most cases a basic coffin of casket is included
- The ashes are returned to the family. This way they can decide on the final resting place for their loved one, and whether or not they will hold a memorial service.
Why People Opt for Direct Cremation
- Eliminates the stress of planning a funeral service immediately after a person’s death when their family is in mourning.
- A fitting memorial service can be organised for a later date (if desired) when it’s not so rushed. The family also has time to decide on the most meaningful location to spread the person’s ashes.
- If there aren’t many family members or friends of the deceased living nearby or still alive this might be the most appropriate alternative. In addition, Covid-19 border closures in Australia and the uncertainty surrounding them, may have led more people to choose a non-attended cremation.
- This option is generally much more affordable than full funeral services or ceremonies. In saying that, costs can add up for those who choose to have a memorial service down the track.
Expert tip: If you’re thinking about a non-attended cremation, we recommend doing your research before making a commitment because some companies offer “packages” for their non-attended cremations, and we believe it is probably best to avoid these. At Anton Brown Funerals, we are honest and upfront with our no-service cremations and don’t have any hidden costs.
