If you are concerned about your environmental footprint, you may be researching green burials in Queensland.
At Anton Brown Funerals in Brisbane, we’ve not received a request for a green or natural burial as yet, but if someone wishes to pursue a more sustainable burial option, we would certainly work to fulfil those wishes.
Below, we discuss what a green burial might entail and cemeteries close to Brisbane which offer more sustainable burial options.
What is a Green Burial?
Green burials or funerals are a more sustainable alternative to traditional funeral and burial arrangements as they remove elements that are detrimental to the environment.
For example:
- Headstones aren’t used to mark a person’s burial site, instead markers such as a rock, tree or plant may be used in their place. In some natural burial sites grave markers are not allowed at all.
- The coffin is eco-friendly and made from biodegradable materials such as cardboard, paper, wicker, soft woods, bamboo
- An eco-urn which is made from biodegradable materials, such as unfired clay, tree bark or recycled paper, is used to house a person’s cremated remains.
- Biodegradable clothing or shrouds are used to dress the body
- Embalming does not occur, as it uses specific chemicals to slow down the body’s natural decomposition process.
Green Burial Queensland
In South-East Queensland and surrounds there is only a small number of places to have a green or natural burial, including:
- Alberton Cemetery at Alberton (Gold Coast)
While green or natural burials are not commonplace – and to date we are yet to receive a request for this kind of burial – we are willing to accommodate your needs and wishes for a funeral or burial that is eco-friendly.
