More and more Australians are choosing cremation over a burial and if you or your loved one are among them, then you may have questions about picking a columbarium niche.
There is a lot to keep in mind when determining a final resting place in a columbarium or elsewhere, for example, if the spot is meaningful to you or your family, and if anyone else you love is laid to rest there.
We elaborate on those considerations below, but before we do, we will touch on what a columbarium niche is.
What is a Columbarium Niche?
A columbarium niche is a small recess within a columbarium wall where urns containing cremated remains are stored.
Choosing to have ashes interred in a niche means that there is a permanent and meaningful place where family and friends can go to honour and visit the deceased after their passing.
Also, some people find it beneficial during the grieving process to attend a physical location where a person is laid to rest on special days, such as birthdays, anniversaries, mother’s or father’s day.
In saying that, many people prefer to have their ashes scattered at a location that is significant to them or their loved ones.
What to Consider when Picking a Columbarium Niche
If you or a loved one has decided to be cremated and laid to rest at a columbarium, the following should be considered.
- Position on the columbarium wall:
- Close to or next to relatives
- Level on the wall. Position may impact cost
- Size of urn – Ensure it fits within the niche
- Size of niche – Double niches may be available for those who wish to be interred beside a spouse or family member
- Plaque:
- What text will you include? It’s likely the design will be discussed with an external supplier
- A plaque will incur an additional cost.
- Ceremony: Do you wish to hold an interment of ashes ceremony ?
