Sending a Loved One’s Dead Body Overseas from Australia
Each country has different requirements surrounding documentation and regulations when it comes to receiving a deceased person’s remains.
However, if your loved one dies in Australia you will need an Australian funeral director to register their death and organise their repatriation.
At Anton Brown Funerals, our compassionate funeral directors are very experienced and will take care of every step with great care and efficiency.
Typically, the repatriation process to another country involves the following steps.
- Step 1:
After the funeral director has received your loved one’s body, they will be embalmed and a bio-seal will be put in place.
If embalming is not allowed by their religion, their body will be cremated.
- Step 2:
Flights are booked to a person’s homeland.
Please be aware that we may be unable to get a flight straight away due to current COVIDovid-19 restrictions and its impact on flight timetables.
- Step 3:
The deceased’s passport will need to be cancelled with their home country’s embassy or consulate; however, it must be kept with the body (see step 4). [GF3]
- Step 4:
Anton Brown Funerals will register the death and apply for a death certificate.
IMPORTANT: It is a requirement that original death certificates and a person’s passport travel with them when they are repatriated.
- Step 5:
We must have confirmation of who is collecting the body at the destination, along with their address and phone number.
