If your loved one in Queensland has passed away and wishes to be cremated, you may have questions about scattering their ashes and their final resting place.
Below we discuss a few considerations when choosing that location.
Things to Remember When Scattering Ashes in Queensland
- Do you need permission to scatter ashes in Queensland?
A person’s final resting place can be an incredibly personal choice and hold significant meaning, but it’s important to check if you’re allowed to scatter ashes in the chosen spot.
The Queensland Government website says, “You may scatter ashes on land or water and hold a small, private ceremony—no permit is required.”
And while this means it is normally okay to disperse ashes at many beaches, rivers or public parks, you would need permission to scatter ashes in a few locations, such as:
- A privately-owned property
- Federally-managed land, such as Commonwealth reserves and marine areas
- From a vessel
- Will the place always be there, or could it be demolished or redeveloped in the future?
While your loved one may have been determined to have their remains scattered in a specific location, will the location be around forever?
For example, they may have loved to visit local park or structures and you may have many treasured memories there, but it may be redeveloped or damaged in the future.
Some people want their ashes scattered at their family home, however, if it is ever sold in the future relatives may be unable to visit the memorial or resting place.
- Is the chosen location a public place?
Depending on the chosen location, you will have to be mindful about members of the public who are also present. It may be better to scatter the ashes at a time of day when there are fewer people around.
- What are the wind conditions like?
Check the weather forecast and consider wind conditions when dispersing the remains –particularly near the ocean or bodies of water.
