While death is an inevitable part of life, it’s something many of us don’t like to discuss. However, at some point you may need to decide and express if you’d like to be buried or cremated.
In this blog, we take a look at some queries about cremation, specifically, what it is and what the process involves.
What is Cremation?
Cremation is an ancient practise which involves using extreme heat to reduce a deceased person’s body to ashes.
There are various reasons why a person may decide to be cremated rather than being buried, such as their environmental stance, their religious beliefs, or their desire for a more affordable farewell.
What does the Cremation Process in Australia Involve?
- The remains have to be formally identified
- The body is prepared for cremation e.g. watches, rings, or other items which may cause damage to the machinery or impact the process are to be removed.
- Once the body is ready, it is placed into a coffin. If the coffin is adorned with flowers from the funeral, these flowers are removed. Anyone wishing to keep a casket floral arrangement can advise our team.
- From here, typically the cremator’s first chamber is heated up before the coffin is positioned inside it.
- The cremated remains are then placed in a second chamber, where they are removed from the coffin and put onto a cooling tray.
- Any metallic contents, such as coffin nails and prostheses, are then removed
- From here, the remains are ground to the final powder-like consistency in a machine called a cremulator.
- Finally, the ashes are placed inside a container and sealed.
When Does Cremation Take Place?
It is common for a cremation to occur on the same day as the funeral service.
Where Does Cremation Occur?
Cremations are carried out at crematoriums.
In Australia, these are normally situated within cemeteries.
How Long Does Cremation Take?
There are a range of factors that can influence the amount of time it takes for a cremation to occur. The entire process can take up to four (4) hours.
