Who do you tell first when someone passes away?
The person you call first, and exactly what you need to do afterwards, will be dependent on how and where the deceased passed away.
If they were at home but already unwell and the death was expected, you can call your loved one’s doctor first.
If they died unexpectedly at home and hadn’t seen a doctor in the past three months, the first number to call is 000 as the police must be notified.
When a person dies in a nursing home or hospital, the exact process within each facility differs, but they will organise for a death certificate to be issued. You will need to tell them which funeral director you have entrusted with the arrangements, so they can arrange for the deceased to be transferred to the funeral home.
