What’s typically included in cremation costs
Typically included:
- Professional care and transfer of your loved one into our care
- A quality coffin appropriate to the service
- Death registration and necessary permits (a legal requirement in Queensland, involving coordination with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages)
- Cremation facility fee (set by the crematorium and passed on at cost — we don’t mark this up)
- Transportation within the local Brisbane metropolitan area
- Return of ashes in a standard urn
- Assistance with death certificates and family paperwork
Typically not included (available as add-ons):
- Chapel hire for a formal service
- Celebrant or clergy fees
- Premium urns, memorial products, or keepsake jewellery
- Printed orders of service or floral tributes
- Death notices or obituary placements
- Transportation from outside the local metropolitan area
A note on the cremation facility fee
A portion of every cremation cost in Brisbane goes directly to the crematorium. This fee is set by the facility itself and is passed on to families at cost by the funeral director. At Anton Brown Funerals, we don’t add a margin to this charge.
As of 2026, Brisbane City Council (BCC) cremation fees are publicly available on the BCC website, something we actively encourage families to verify independently. This kind of transparency is rare in the industry, but we think it should be the norm.
If you choose to pay the crematorium directly (noting that BCC is not GST-registered, which may make direct payment marginally more cost-effective), we can advise you on how to arrange this.
What affects the final cost?
Several factors influence where your cremation cost sits within the ranges above:
The service type: Direct cremation involves less coordination than a full attended service with a chapel and celebrant. The service fee, which makes up the majority of any funeral cost, reflects the professional time, care, and human involvement required.
The coffin: Coffins vary significantly in price and quality. Suppliers increase their prices regularly, and this flows through to funeral costs over time. We’re happy to walk you through your options without pressure.
The chapel: If you want a formal service, chapel hire is typically charged separately. We don’t mark up on chapel hire. What the venue charges is what you pay.
Transportation: Standard quotes cover transfers within the Brisbane metropolitan area. If your loved one passed away in regional Queensland, on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, or interstate, additional transportation fees will apply. Always confirm what “local area” means in any quote you receive.
What does a Brisbane cremation cost with Anton Brown Funerals?
Cremation costs in Brisbane vary depending on the type of service you choose, the provider, and the specific inclusions involved. Prices across the industry have continued to rise in recent years, reflecting increases from crematorium operators, councils, and coffin suppliers, so it’s worth understanding what’s behind any quote you receive.
Here’s a realistic guide to what families in Brisbane are typically paying for each type of cremation in 2026. Note the prices below are accurate at time of publishing in March 2026. For the current information all our services, visit our price list.
Direct cremation
Direct cremation (also known as simple cremation or no service no attendance cremation) is the most straightforward option. There’s no formal ceremony or chapel service involved. Families can expect to pay around the low $3,000 range.
This service includes use of a Basic Chipboard Coffin and does not include a funeral service. Package includes basic coffin and transport from Anton Brown Funerals to crematorium and care and preparation of the body prior to cremation.

Church service with cremation
When a service is held in a church, the cremation itself takes place afterward at either a private or council crematorium. Because chapel hire at the crematorium is not required, the overall cost is generally lower than a full crematorium service. However, churches have their own separate fees or offerings, which vary depending on the parish. As a guide, a church service followed by cremation is typically in the high $6,000 range, plus the church’s individual fee.

Cremation service at a crematorium
If you choose to hold the service at a crematorium, the total cost will depend on whether the venue is privately operated (such as Invocare) or run by Brisbane City Council. Both options include chapel hire, the cremation fee, required permits, coffin, death certificate, and professional services. Private crematorium fees are typically slightly higher than council facilities, which is why overall totals can vary by a small margin. As a guide, families can expect costs to sit around the mid $7,000 range depending on the venue selected.

Cremation vs burial: a brief cost comparison
Some families arrive at this conversation of weighing up cremation versus a burial. If that’s you, it’s worth knowing that burial in Brisbane typically involves costs beyond the funeral service itself including grave plot purchase or lease, interment fees, and headstone or memorial costs. These can add several thousand dollars to the total, often making burial meaningfully more expensive than an attended cremation service.
That said, the right choice depends on far more than cost alone, and we’re here to talk through whatever matters most to your family.
Comparing cremation quotes: what to check
If you’re comparing quotes from multiple providers, here’s what to look at before making a decision:
- Are the cremation facility fees listed separately, or bundled into a single price? Bundling can make it harder to see where costs are concentrated.
- Is a coffin included, and at what specification? A basic coffin and a quality coffin can differ by hundreds of dollars.
- Are after-hours transfer fees or call-out charges mentioned? Not all providers disclose these upfront.
- Is the celebrant fee included, or additional? This is one of the most common sources of unexpected charges.
- What does “local area” mean for transportation? Confirm the geographical coverage before assuming it includes your location.
- Is GST included in the quoted price? Ensure you’re comparing like for like.
A trustworthy provider will give you a fully itemised quote without hesitation. If a quote feels vague or comes with pressure to decide quickly, take that as a signal to ask more questions.
Corporate vs. family-owned funeral providers
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Why do prices vary so much between providers?”.
Part of the answer comes down to who owns the business. Large corporate funeral groups operate at scale, but they also carry shareholder obligations, and those costs are built into their pricing. If you’re paying top dollar at a corporate provider, some of that is going to shareholders, not to the care of your loved one.
At the other end, providers with unusually low prices may be cutting corners on the quality of care, staffing, or inclusions.
Anton Brown Funerals is independently owned and family-operated. Our pricing reflects genuine value: real personalisation, transparent costs, and care that isn’t driven by a revenue target. We’ve written more about the difference between corporate and family-owned funeral providers here. It’s worth a read if you’re in the comparison stage.
Why pricing transparency matters
We’re proud that our full price list is publicly available. In an industry where many providers still require you to call before disclosing any costs, we think that transparency is simply the right approach.
Paying more doesn’t automatically mean better care. And paying rock-bottom prices can mean corners are being cut. What matters is finding a provider who is honest about costs, experienced in delivering genuine care, and willing to personalise the service to reflect the person who has died. That’s what we aim to offer, and why we’re happy to answer any question you have, at any time.
