We are often asked how long after death is a funeral in Australia?
The exact number of days varies depending on a range of circumstances, but typically a funeral in Australia is held between two and five days after a person’s passing.
In saying that, our Brisbane funeral home does not encourage rushing through the planning process if this timeframe does not suit you and your family.
At Anton Brown Funerals, we want to ensure the farewell arranged for your loved one is exactly as you picture it, so we work with each individual family to personalise and perfect arrangements.

How Long After Death is a Funeral in Australia?
In Australia a funeral is commonly held between two and five days after a person has passed away.
There are a range of factors that can impact this timeframe, and if those family members helping with the arrangements are overcome by grief or located elsewhere it would be reasonable to extend this timeframe.
Here are a few considerations that may impact when the funeral or memorial is held:
- Availability of desired funeral/memorial service location
- If the remains need to be relocated to a different state or country for the farewell
- People attending will need to take time off work and out-of-town guests will need to travel for the service.
- Specific dates around the time of death. For example, the funeral or memorial may be held the following week if a family member has a birthday or anniversary which falls close to the date.
- Religion/culture can also play a part in the timeframe of the farewell. For some religions the funeral must take place as soon as possible after the death I.e. 24-48 hours.
- The body’s natural decomposition process must be taken into consideration. It can be slowed down with embalming if required.
- Obituary to be written and published. These notices tend to be brief, but there is specific information required to complete one, including personal information about the deceased and details of the funeral of memorial service.
Funeral Trends in Recent Years
The pandemic and the resulting state and international border closures in recent years has led to the delay in some funerals.
Livestreaming of services has also become commonplace to ensure those who cannot be there in person are able to view the service online.
We also noticed that the number of non-attended or direct cremations has increased.
